The Polystichum retroso-palaceum or sometimes called Japanese Sword Fern have strong, woody, scaly rhizomes that may be spreading or erect, sometimes developing into a short stocky trunk. The undersides of the leaflets are sometimes very scaly, and are studded with rows of spore-bodies. They are hardy, easy to grow and makes a good pot or garden specimen. They appreciate cool, moist, humus-rich soil in a position in shade or dappled sunlight, but can survive in drier brighter locations
